The idea of HAMARTIA began with a conversation at the Science Museum in London, England, with my then 14-year-old son. We became enthralled with an exhibit on fears and phobias which explained things from a scientific point of view and also explored popular beliefs such as reincarnation. I discovered that my son had a fear of spiders, and I disclosed my fear of balloons and turtlenecks. This led us to conclude that in a previous life he had died of a spider bite and I had been strangled at a party—obviously. It got me thinking about the idea of a soul dying off from enduring too many reincarnation cycles. What then? Could you travel to a past life and clone a soul? A vivid scene emerged in my head and then another and another. I weaved them together until Hamartia was born.
My writing music varies based on the scene I’m hashing out: Hans Zimmerman’s Gladiator soundtrack for heroic scenes, angry Eminem for when I need my characters to misbehave, AC DC for action-packed sequences. As for plain old editing, I listen to a bag of mixed stuff from trip-hop and Steampunk and Disney instrumentals to Cuban salsa. My tastes are diverse.
